16. Laurell K. Hamilton - Cerulean Sins
After the heavy reading I decided to pour on the smut.
In this latest installment of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, Anita (once again) has too many things on her plate. Jean-Claude, Anita's vampire lover and Vampire Master of the city of St. Louis, has an old friend coming to visit. This isn't going to be a friendly reunion either. Belle Morte, Jean-Claude's sourdre de sang (essentially the head of his lineage) is planning on coming to St. Louis to find out why Jean-Claude voluntarily left him. Belle's vampire power is called the ardeur, where she needs to feed off of sex, and she can give it to other vampires. Thus, Belle was considered irresistable as men and women would kill themselves if they cannot share pleasures with her. So for Jean-Claude to leave her voluntarily without trying to kill himself seemed impossible to her. The meeting was supposed to take place three months in the future but all of a sudden, Musette, one of Belle's entrusted followers (and most vicious) appears in St. Louis with her entourage expecting royal treatment. She is there to see what weaknesses she can find in Jean-Claude's heirarchy and see if there was some way to destroy it and force both Jean-Claude and Asher back into Belle's waiting arms. Unfortunately for Anita, Belle wants her too since she belongs to Jean-Claude as his human servant and he belongs to Belle because she is his soudre de sang. In the process, Anita comes not only face to face with Belle but a darkness even more sinister....the Mother of Darkess...the Mother of all vampires.
Back in everyday land, Anita is also involved in a number of rather gruesome murders that seem to have been committed by a lycanthrope. The normally level headed Lt. Dolph is in the process of a nervous breakdown for some reason, and the rest of the police force is giving her a hard time with access to the cases even though she is the department's expert.
Tied in with all this is the even more complicated sex life of Anita. At the end of the last book, she was lovers with Jean-Claude and Micah, her Nimir-Raj (leader of the wereleopards...Anita is the Nimir-Ra). Now, in order to save Asher from a fate worse than death (returning to Belle's court) she must become lovers with him as well. On top of that, Belle begins to mess with Anita's head by calling up her ardeur, which she got with the third vampire mark Jean-Claude gave her, at the worst possible times. If she doesn't feed the ardeur she will go mad so whoever is available becomes an outlet for her.
Classic Anita Blake novel. I loved it so much that I couldn't put it down and read it straight through to 4am! The plot is well developed here, as are the new characters introduced, and there is just enough erotica to keep your interest as well. A definite two-thumbs up! :)
