59. Laurell K. Hamilton - Incubus Dreams

In this new book in the Anita Blake series, the famed Vampire Hunter is called in by St. Louis' Regional Preternatural Crime Investigation Team to help investigate a gang-murder of a stripper. Once Anita looks over the corpse, she discovers that the murder was committed by not one, but seven vampires. She realizes that a rogue master vampire was involved in this, but her consort and vampire Master of the City, Jean-Claude, cannot sense this new vampire's presence. This alone is a disturbing fact because it means that this vampire is very, very powerful. When another stripper's body is found, along with information that ties these murders to similar ones in other cities, Anita knows she has a group of serial killers on her hands.

While all of this is going on, Anita is still struggling with the ardeur that has plagued her since sharing the third mark with Jean-Claude. With the stress of the investigation, she finds herself in situations where she is forced to "feed" on relative strangers to prevent her from killing someone. Also, she inadvertently forms a triumverate with "her" vampire, Damian, and her wereleopard Nathanial.

OK, I like sex as much as the next person, but come on....for a 700 page book, a good 500 pages of it revolved around sex. Somewhere in there was a good idea that would've made a great Anita Blake novel, but it was diluted with all the sex. I mean, Anita was having sex in numerous positions with numerous lovers in numerous places. I laugh at this 'cause in the first books of the series, Anita was a self-avowed prude. Now she's sleeping with people she barely knew just to feed the ardeur. Oh there's a murder to investigate, but if she doesn't have sex with two people, Damian is going to die or she'll kill somebody or her brain will explode. It's ridiculous. It's bad enough that Hamilton's Merry Gentry books are so revolved around sex, but now the Anita Blake books? She's ruining a good thing.
