68. Kelly Armstrong - Stolen
In this second book of the Women of the Underworld series, we are once again introduced to Elena Michaels, the only female werewolf in North America. As one of her jobs for the Pack, Elena is supposed to follow up on any stories where the existence of werewolves could come out in the open. So when she reads an ad for real proof on the existence of werewolves, Elena follows up with it quickly. The woman who placed the ad, Ruth Winterborne, had proof of werewolves but that wasn't why she wanted to meet Elena. Ruth, along with her daughter Paige, are witches. REAL witches. They had found out that a shaman had been kidnapped by some group who placed in him a compound out in the middle of nowhere where he was studied, along with a few other supernaturals (the shaman had astral projected to another shaman to notify him of what was going on). Ruth and Paige wanted the Pack's help in stopping this group from not only exposing the supernaturals from mankind but also to stop the kidnapping and whatever experiments they were doing on them.
The Pack is hesitant to join in but then shortly thereafter, both Elena and Ruth are kidnapped by the group. Elena discovers that the head of this organization was Ty Winsloe, "billionaire and computer geek extraordinaire." Along with the help of a parapsychologist and a sorceror, the group is collecting representatives of all the supernatural species, including werewolves, witches, and half-demons in the hope of unlocking the mysteries of the supernatural and somehow applying them to mankind. When a captive is no longer useful to the project, Winsloe hunts them down in cruel game-like fashion.
I really enjoyed this book. I had read two of Armstrong's other books, including the first book Bitten and this has got to be one of my favorites. She did a fantastic job of keeping me at the edge of my seat for the entire book. Even with the ending, which she could've made simple and quick, she made it even more nerve-wracking, wonder "are they going to make it?" the whole time. I really recommend anybody who is looking for a good werewolf book.
