7. Piers Anthony - On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, Book 1)
"When Zane shot Death, he learned, too late, that he would have to assume his place, speeding over the world riding his pale horse, and ending the lives of others. Sooner than he would have thought possible, Zane found himself being drawn to Satan's plot. Already the Prince of Evil was forging a trap in which Zane must act to destroy Luna, the woman he loved...unless he could discover the only way out...." - Book Description
My husband had this book out for some reason and I saw it in passing. For some reason it grabbed my attention and I said "hey, let's try this one." It was a good choice.
Zane, the protagonist of the book, is having a rough life. In a world where magic and science coincide and where Satan is running a million dollar advertising campaign, Zane's luck runs out. He's out of money and he traded away the chance of a perfect romance for a fake Wealthstone. When he comes across a gun after saving the "virtues" of a ghost, he decides he's going to kill himself. However, when Death shows up to take him, he shoots Death instead. What he did not realize was that the killer of Death must take his place. As the book moves along, Zane finds himself in a complex plot involving Satan and the other four Incarnations (Fate, War, Time, and Nature) to prematurely end the life of Luna Kaftan.
Great book. While my favorite will always be Terry Pratchett's version of Death, this one holds up pretty well. My favorite part of the book was his horse Mortis, that turned into a car, a speedboat, and an airplane whenever Zane needed him to. I'm looking forward to the second book.
