44. Jacqueline Carey - Kushiel's Chosen
This book is the second in the Kushiel’s Legacy series and continues where the first book left off.
After spending a year on her estates in Montreve with Jocelin and her Boys, Phedre no Delaunay receives an unusual package: her sangoire cloak that had been taken by the traitor Melisande Shahrizaia. It was Melisande who managed to escape her death sentence at the end of the last book and Phedre believes that not only is she up to no good again, but that only herself would be able to find the traitor. Driven by passion of both love and hatred towards Melisande, Phedre, along with Joscelin and the final three members of Phedre's Boys, travels to La Serenissima to search for the traitorous woman as this was the locale from where her cloak had been sent. Unfortunately when she arrives in La Serenissima, things are not what they seem. Phedre soon finds herself involved in a large plot to assassinate Queen Ysandre that has infiltrated even the temples of the Goddess Asaharat-of-the-Sea. Just when Phedre thinks she has everything found out she is kidnapped and thrown into the harshest prison La Serenissima has to offer. After a daring escape that almost ended in her death, Phedre is rescued by an Illyrian pirate whose plans for her are unknown. Can she somehow get word to her Queen before it is too late?
This was quite an enjoyable book. There were a lot less names to confuse me this time around (my biggest complaint of the first book) and the plots were just amazing. The book had me on the edge of my seat and I finished the book rather quickly considering it was over 700 pages. I highly recommend it!
